This painting was inspired by my travels to this small medieval island in Normandy, the north of France. We walked 2 km across ‘quicksand’ during low tide to get to this island, which would start to gobble you up if you stomped on it continuously.
We had to walk fairly quickly, otherwise it could get dangerous as the tide started to come in. The island itself and buildings on it were magical, with steep and narrow cobblestone passageways, and staircases galore.
